Over the years, through my practice, I have noticed a significant gap in the guidance and education women receive about pelvic health. Many women in Mississauga and beyond are not provided with clear, comprehensive advice on maintaining a strong and functional pelvic floor.
But what exactly do I mean by pelvic health?
Pelvic health refers to the proper function and strength of the pelvic floor muscles, which play a crucial role in core stability, bladder control, and overall well-being. I’m not talking about gynecological conditions or reproductive health issues, but rather the physical fitness and resilience of the pelvic floor—an essential aspect of a woman’s overall health that is often overlooked.
The pelvic floor is a complex network of muscles that provides crucial support for the organs above it, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum. Due to anatomical differences, women are more susceptible to pelvic floor issues, making proper care and awareness essential—especially during pregnancy and postpartum. In Mississauga, where access to specialized healthcare is growing, more women are seeking guidance on maintaining pelvic floor strength before, during, and after childbirth. Ideally, education on pelvic health should begin early, even before the childbearing years, to help prevent future complications. As women age, maintaining a strong and well-functioning pelvic floor is key to reducing the risk of incontinence and other related concerns.
A common issue I encounter in my practice is the misconception around Kegel exercises. Many women are simply told to do them without a clear understanding of how they work. Most assume it’s just about stopping and starting urine flow—but the pelvic floor is far more complex than that!
Optimal pelvic health requires a balance of flexibility, strength, and proper abdominal pressure regulation. By taking a holistic approach to pelvic floor care, women can enhance their overall well-being, improve core stability, and prevent discomfort or dysfunction as they move through different life stages.

When it comes to pelvic floor health, most people focus solely on strengthening. However, just like any other muscle group, the pelvic floor functions best when it is both strong and flexible. That’s why improving flexibility should be a key part of your pelvic health routine.
One of the best exercises for pelvic floor mobility is squatting. I recommend practicing deep squats with your heels firmly on the ground—similar to how you would squat in nature. If you struggle to keep your heels down, start by squatting on your toes and gradually work towards lowering your heels to the floor. You can also use a sturdy surface, like a kitchen countertop, for support as you build flexibility. Over time, aim for a full squat with a relaxed tailbone and a straight back. The more you squat, the better your pelvic floor will function!
